A safe browsing tool so that kids can use them.
Pros: NetDino is a web browser that is specifically designed for kids. It keeps the bad content out no matter what and it is very nearly impossible for a child to accidentally view content that he or she is not supposed to. This is achieved by the NetDino browser essentially being a client to NetDino’s servers. In this way only content that is allowed by that server can be accessed by a NetDino browser. Internet content is available in five categories: Child Pages, Learning, Games, Fan Pages and Nature. Safety settings are password-protected and can be adjusted to the child’s age. A homepage can be defined and links to certain websites can be suggested.
If links to a known age-restricted website is available, the NetDino mechanism makes it inactive and links are also constantly monitored and automatically kept up to date.
Cons: Although the interface is nice looking and simple enough the question is: is it easy enough for small kids? Also, because of everything coming through the NetDino Servers, although it is not a bottle-neck now, it may become one as NetDino grows in popularity. There is also the limitation that parents cannot select the content that their kids should see (because NetDino does it for them). The security of this is good, but why should parents have to rely on NetDino alone for what kind of content becomes available to their kids? This is safe, but restricted. There needs to be additional customization options – it needs to be better than just setting a homepage and suggestions. There are also promotional pop-ups which ought not to be there.
Overall: 4 stars. Good concept, but has some limitations.
